Italian beauty MARINAGELA MELATO who starred in “Swept Away” and “Flash Gordon” is dead at 71.
Melato who found fame costarring with Giancarlo Gianni in director Lina Wertmuller’s landmark films“The Seduction of Mimi” and “Swept Away” died in Rome on Friday.
Medical director Giuseppe Casale told the NY Times she had been admitted to a hospice with cancer 20 days ago.
Mariangela Melato was born in Milan on Sept. 19, 1941. Her father, a police officer fled from Nazai Germany to Italy. Her mother was from Milan.
Melato also worked for other top directors including Vittorio De Sica (“Lo Chiameremo Andrea”), Franco Brusati (“To Forget Venice”) and Elio Petri (“Todo Modo” and “The Working Class Goes to Heaven”).
